He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Zanotelli showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Zanotelli's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with renowned pianists such as Alfred Brendel and Wilhelm Kempff. Zanotelli's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. In 1950, Zanotelli made his debut as a soloist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and Zanotelli was praised for his technical skill and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of Zanotelli's career as a concert pianist. Over the next few years, Zanotelli performed extensively throughout Europe, playing with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also performed in the United States, making his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1958. Zanotelli's repertoire was vast, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as György Ligeti and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In addition to his solo performances, Zanotelli was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Zanotelli was also a member of the Vienna Piano Trio, which he co-founded in 1968. Throughout his career, Zanotelli received numerous awards and accolades. In 1960, he was awarded the Mozart Medal by the Mozartgemeinde Wien for his contributions to the interpretation of Mozart's music. He was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1972 and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1992. Zanotelli continued to perform well into his later years, and his last public performance was in 2005, at the age of 73. He passed away on January 1, 2010, at the age of 77. Hans Zanotelli was a true master of the piano, and his contributions to the world of classical music will not be forgotten.
