The ensemble was founded in 1988 by members of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, who wanted to explore the chamber music repertoire and perform in a smaller ensemble setting. The founding members of the ensemble were violinists Pekka Kuusisto and Jaakko Kuusisto, violist Lilli Maijala, cellist Marko Ylönen, and pianist Ralf Gothóni. Over the years, the ensemble has had several changes in its lineup, but has maintained a core group of musicians who have been with the ensemble for many years. The ensemble has gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. They have performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salzburg Festival. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was their performance at the 1998 Edinburgh International Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their performance of works by Sibelius, Rautavaara, and Shostakovich. The ensemble has also been recognized with several awards, including the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2003. The ensemble's repertoire includes works from the classical and romantic periods, as well as contemporary music. They have collaborated with many composers, including Kaija Saariaho, Magnus Lindberg, and Einojuhani Rautavaara, and have premiered several new works. In addition to their performances, the ensemble is also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians in Finland and abroad, and have organized workshops and masterclasses for students. Overall, Sinfonia Lahti Chamber Ensemble is a highly respected and accomplished ensemble that has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Their commitment to excellence and innovation has earned them a place among the top chamber ensembles in the world.More....
