Simone Eckert is a renowned German cellist and viola da gamba player who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born in 1969 in Frankfurt, Germany, Eckert showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. She later switched to the viola da gamba, a stringed instrument that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Eckert's musical education began at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where she studied under the guidance of Rainer Zipperling. She later continued her studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where she was mentored by Jordi Savall, one of the most prominent viola da gamba players of our time. Eckert's talent and dedication to her craft soon became evident, and she began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concerts around the world. In 1993, she made her debut as a soloist with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing the Cello Concerto in B minor by Antonín Dvořák. Over the years, Eckert has collaborated with many renowned musicians and ensembles, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. She has also performed with Jordi Savall's ensemble Hespèrion XXI, with whom she has recorded several albums. One of the highlights of Eckert's career was her performance at the 2006 Bachfest Leipzig, where she played the complete suites for solo viola da gamba by Johann Sebastian Bach. Her performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it cemented her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Bach's music. Eckert has also been recognized for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 2007, she was awarded the Echo Klassik award for her recording of the complete viola da gamba sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. The following year, she received the Telemann Prize from the city of Magdeburg in recognition of her outstanding performances of the music of Georg Philipp Telemann. In addition to her work as a performer, Eckert is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, and she has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as musicians in their own right. Eckert's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the music of Bach, Telemann, and Marin Marais. Her recordings, which include solo and chamber music works, have been released on labels such as Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, and Sony Classical. Despite her many achievements, Eckert remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and record, and she is always seeking new ways to explore and interpret the music of the past. Her passion for music and her commitment to excellence have made her one of the most respected and admired musicians of our time.
