Genre:OperaRichard Cassilly was an American tenor who was known for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. He was born on August 14, 1927, in Washington, D.C. and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged their son's musical talents from a young age. Cassilly began his formal music education at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he studied voice and opera. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was mentored by the renowned soprano Lotte Lehmann. Cassilly made his professional debut in 1952 with the New York City Opera, where he quickly established himself as a leading tenor. He went on to perform with many of the world's most prestigious opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. One of Cassilly's most notable performances was his portrayal of Siegmund in Wagner's "Die Walküre" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1976. His powerful voice and dramatic interpretation of the role earned him critical acclaim and cemented his reputation as one of the world's leading Wagnerian tenors. Cassilly also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with major orchestras around the world. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler. In addition to his performing career, Cassilly was also a respected voice teacher and mentor to many young singers. He taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and his students included such notable singers as Deborah Voigt and Ben Heppner. Throughout his career, Cassilly received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. He was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government, and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2003. Cassilly continued to perform and teach until his death on March 30, 1998, at the age of 70. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest American tenors of the 20th century, and his powerful voice and dramatic interpretations of some of the most challenging roles in the operatic repertoire continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.More....
