Armonico Consort is a British classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The group was founded in 2001 by Christopher Monks, a conductor and harpsichordist who had previously worked with the Academy of Ancient Music and the BBC Singers. Monks formed Armonico Consort with the goal of creating a flexible ensemble that could perform a wide range of repertoire, from small-scale chamber music to large-scale choral works. The group's name comes from the Italian word "armonico," which means "harmonic" or "musical." In its early years, Armonico Consort focused primarily on performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including works by composers such as Monteverdi, Bach, and Handel. The group quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming, which often combined music with other art forms such as dance and theater. One of Armonico Consort's early highlights was its performance of Bach's St. John Passion at St. John's Smith Square in London in 2003.
