Born on May 26, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Orkis grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Orkis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Orkis received his early music education at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he earned his Master of Music degree. Orkis began his professional career as a pianist in the early 1970s. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Orkis's career was his collaboration with the renowned violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter. The two musicians first met in 1988 and have since performed together on numerous occasions. Orkis has accompanied Mutter on some of her most celebrated recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning album, "Vivaldi: The Four Seasons." Orkis has also worked with other notable musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. He has performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. In addition to his work as a performer, Orkis is also a respected music educator. He has taught at several institutions, including the Peabody Conservatory, the University of Maryland, and the New England Conservatory of Music. Orkis has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1995, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been honored with the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
