Born in New York City in 1955, Lewis showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public. Lewis went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. He then continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia, where he studied with some of the most esteemed piano teachers in the world. It was during this time that Lewis developed his signature style, which is characterized by a deep emotional intensity and a technical precision that is second to none. Throughout his career, Lewis has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and Zubin Mehta. One of Lewis's most memorable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1982. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, to critical acclaim. The New York Times praised Lewis's "brilliant technique and deep musicality," and the performance launched him onto the international stage. Lewis has also been recognized for his solo performances, winning numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1986, he won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise.
