List began playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. List's talent was recognized early on, and he was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at the age of 12. He studied under the renowned pianist Rudolf Serkin, who became a major influence on List's musical style. List graduated from the Curtis Institute in 1936, and he went on to study with the pianist Artur Schnabel in Europe. List's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the 1940s. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1943, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists of his generation. List was known for his technical virtuosity and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. List's repertoire was wide-ranging, and he was equally at home playing the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms as he was playing the music of contemporary composers. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Chopin, and he recorded several albums of Chopin's music throughout his career. List's performances were highly acclaimed, and he received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1950, he was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Award, which is given to outstanding young musicians. He was also awarded the Harriet Cohen International Music Award in 1952, and he was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. List's career as a concert pianist spanned several decades, and he continued to perform well into his 80s. He was known for his tireless work ethic and his dedication to his craft. List was also a respected teacher, and he taught at several universities throughout his career, including the University of Michigan and the University of Houston. List's legacy as a pianist and musician is still felt today. His recordings continue to be popular among classical music enthusiasts, and his influence can be heard in the playing of many contemporary pianists. List died on April 22, 1985, but his music lives on as a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.More....
