He was the youngest of four children and showed an early interest in music. His father, a violinist, recognized his son's talent and began teaching him the piano when he was just four years old. Pennario's family moved to Los Angeles when he was eight years old, and he continued his musical education under the tutelage of Isabelle Vengerova, a renowned piano teacher. He made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12, playing the Grieg Piano Concerto. Pennario's talent was recognized early on, and he won numerous awards and competitions throughout his career. In 1941, he won the Naumburg Award, which is given to outstanding young musicians. He also won the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1943, which launched his career as a concert pianist. Pennario's career took off in the 1940s and 1950s, and he became known for his virtuosic performances and technical skill. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Pennario's most memorable performances was his 1958 performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fritz Reiner. The performance was recorded and became one of the best-selling classical recordings of all time. Pennario was also known for his recordings of the music of George Gershwin. He recorded Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, and his recordings of Gershwin's piano music remain some of the most popular recordings of the composer's work. In addition to his performances and recordings, Pennario was also a prolific composer. He wrote numerous works for piano, including sonatas, concertos, and solo pieces. His compositions were often influenced by his love of jazz and popular music, and he was known for his ability to blend different musical styles. Throughout his career, Pennario received numerous awards and honors. In 1963, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the Italian government for his contributions to music. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Ronald Reagan in 1987. Pennario continued to perform and record well into his later years. He gave his final performance in 1998, at the age of 74, and passed away on June 27, 2008, at the age of 83.
