Nanae grew up in a musical family and started playing the koto at the age of three. She was trained by her father, who was a disciple of the famous koto player Michio Miyagi. Nanae's talent for playing the koto was evident from a young age. She won her first national competition at the age of nine and went on to win many more competitions throughout her childhood. She studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where she received a degree in koto performance. After graduating from university, Nanae began her professional career as a koto player. She quickly gained recognition for her virtuosic playing and innovative compositions. She has performed all over the world, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Some of her most notable performances include playing at the Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Nanae has also collaborated with many other musicians and artists throughout her career. She has worked with jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, as well as classical musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. She has also composed music for films, television, and theater productions. In addition to her performances and compositions, Nanae is also a dedicated teacher.
