Scott Yoo is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a violinist, conductor, and educator. Born in South Korea in 1971, Yoo grew up in the United States and began playing the violin at the age of three. He showed exceptional talent from a young age and went on to study at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world. Yoo's early musical education took place at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay. He later went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. During his time at Yale, Yoo was a student of the renowned violinist and conductor, Ani Kavafian. After completing his formal education, Yoo began his career as a professional musician. He quickly established himself as a talented violinist and performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He also appeared as a soloist with many of these orchestras, performing works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. In addition to his work as a violinist, Yoo also began to establish himself as a conductor. He served as the music director of the Colorado College Summer Music Festival from 2000 to 2003 and was the associate conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra from 2003 to 2005. He has also conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan. One of the highlights of Yoo's career as a conductor was his appointment as the music director of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005. He held this position for three years and was widely praised for his work with the orchestra. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in performances of works by Mexican composers such as Carlos Chávez and Silvestre Revueltas, as well as works by European composers such as Beethoven and Brahms. Yoo's work as a conductor has also led him to collaborate with many of the world's most renowned soloists. He has conducted performances featuring artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Gil Shaham, among others. He has also worked with many up-and-coming musicians, serving as a mentor and teacher to young musicians around the world. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Yoo is also an educator. He has taught at many of the world's most prestigious music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the University of Southern California. He has also served as the artistic director of the Festival Mozaic in San Luis Obispo, California, since 2016. Throughout his career, Yoo has received many awards and honors for his work as a musician and educator. In 2001, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future. He has also been awarded the S&R Washington Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and humanities. Yoo's work as a musician and educator has also been recognized by the Korean government. In 2018, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the President of South Korea.
