Born on December 21, 1959, in New York City, Stern grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Isaac Stern, was a world-famous violinist, and his mother, Vera Stern, was a concert pianist. From a young age, Michael was exposed to the world of classical music and began to develop a deep love and appreciation for the art form. Stern began his formal music education at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied conducting with Jorge Mester and composition with John Corigliano. He later continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller. In addition to his work with the Kansas City Symphony, Stern has also served as the music director of the IRIS Orchestra in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. He has also guest conducted with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
