Born on December 21, 1959, in New York City, Stern grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Isaac Stern, was a world-famous violinist, and his mother, Vera Stern, was a concert pianist. From a young age, Michael was exposed to the world of classical music and began to develop a deep love and appreciation for the art form. Stern began his formal music education at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied conducting with Jorge Mester and composition with John Corigliano.
