David Robertson is a renowned American conductor and musician who has made a significant impact on the classical music world. Born on July 30, 1958, in Santa Monica, California, Robertson grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at an early age. Robertson began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the trumpet and French horn. Robertson attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied French horn and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, where he studied with the renowned conductor Leonard Bernstein. Robertson also studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned a degree in conducting. Robertson's career as a conductor began in 1985 when he was appointed the assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. He later served as the music director of the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris from 1992 to 2000. In 1999, he was appointed the principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London, a position he held until 2004. In 2005, Robertson was appointed the music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2018. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning recording of John Adams' "City Noir." Robertson also collaborated with the orchestra on several innovative projects, including the "Live at Powell Hall" series, which featured live recordings of the orchestra's performances.
