Albert Tiu is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in the Philippines in 1970, Tiu showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of four. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won numerous competitions and performed with major orchestras. Tiu's musical education took him to some of the world's most prestigious institutions. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist and pedagogue Adele Marcus. He then went on to earn his Master's degree from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he studied with Leon Fleisher, one of the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century. Throughout his career, Tiu has been recognized for his exceptional talent and artistry. He has won numerous awards and competitions, including the Gold Medal at the San Antonio International Piano Competition, the Grand Prize at the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, and the First Prize at the Hilton Head International Piano Competition. He has also been a finalist in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. Tiu's performances have taken him to some of the world's most renowned concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Festival Hall in London. He has also performed with major orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Tiu's most notable performances was his debut recital at Carnegie Hall in 1998. The program featured works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, and Tiu's performance was hailed by critics as "brilliant" and "exquisite." The New York Times praised his "impeccable technique and musicality," while the Washington Post called him a "pianist of rare distinction." Tiu has also made a name for himself as a chamber musician, collaborating with some of the world's most renowned artists. He has performed with violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, among others. He is a founding member of the Trio Solisti, a critically acclaimed piano trio that has been praised for its "passionate and insightful" performances. In addition to his performing career, Tiu is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Peabody Conservatory, the University of British Columbia, and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore. He is currently a professor of piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, where he has been praised for his "inspiring and transformative" teaching. Throughout his career, Tiu has remained committed to expanding the repertoire for the piano. He has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Lowell Liebermann, Paul Moravec, and Bright Sheng. He has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete piano works of Samuel Barber.
