He was born on April 16, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Italian immigrant parents. His father was a clarinetist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Gigliotti was exposed to music and showed a keen interest in playing the clarinet. Gigliotti began his musical training at the age of nine, studying under his father. He later went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he was a student of Daniel Bonade, a renowned clarinetist. Gigliotti graduated from the institute in 1942 and joined the United States Army Band during World War II. After the war, Gigliotti returned to Philadelphia and became the principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1949. He held this position for 47 years, until his retirement in 1996. During his tenure with the orchestra, Gigliotti performed under the baton of some of the most famous conductors of the time, including Eugene Ormandy, Riccardo Muti, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Gigliotti was known for his exceptional musicianship and technical skill on the clarinet. He was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University, and the University of Michigan. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Gigliotti received numerous awards and honors. In 1967, he was awarded the Philadelphia Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the city. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. Gigliotti was a prolific recording artist, and his recordings are still highly regarded today. He recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as with other orchestras and chamber ensembles. Some of his most famous recordings include Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, and Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie. Gigliotti was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered many new works for the clarinet. He worked closely with composers such as Samuel Barber, Elliott Carter, and William Bolcom, and his performances of their works were highly praised. In addition to his work as a clarinetist, Gigliotti was also a philanthropist and supporter of the arts. He established the Anthony Gigliotti Foundation, which provides scholarships and grants to young musicians. He also served on the boards of several arts organizations, including the Philadelphia Orchestra Association and the Curtis Institute of Music.
