McCracken's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was mentored by the renowned soprano, Lotte Lehmann. McCracken made his professional debut in 1952, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto at the New York City Opera. He quickly established himself as one of the leading tenors of his generation, and his powerful voice and commanding stage presence made him a favorite with audiences and critics alike. Over the course of his career, McCracken performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. He was particularly renowned for his performances in the operas of Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner, and he was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of the role of Otello. One of McCracken's most memorable performances was his portrayal of the title character in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Samson et Dalila in 1968. His powerful rendition of the aria "Vois ma misère, hélas!" brought the audience to its feet, and the performance was hailed as a triumph. McCracken also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1961, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1985, which is the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. Despite his many accomplishments, McCracken was known for his humility and his dedication to his craft.
