Meta4 is a Finnish classical music quartet that has been captivating audiences around the world with their unique sound and innovative approach to classical music. The quartet consists of violinists Antti Tikkanen and Minna Pensola, violist Atte Kilpeläinen, and cellist Tomas Djupsjöbacka. The quartet was formed in 2001 when the members were studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. They quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and were awarded the first prize in the International Shostakovich Quartet Competition in Moscow in 2004. This was a significant achievement for the quartet, as it was the first time a Finnish quartet had won this prestigious competition. Since then, Meta4 has gone on to perform at some of the world's most renowned concert halls, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the Lincoln Center in New York. They have also collaborated with some of the most prominent musicians in the classical music world, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and conductor Sakari Oramo. One of the highlights of Meta4's career was their performance at the BBC Proms in 2014. They performed a program of works by Sibelius, including his String Quartet in D minor, Op. 56, "Voces Intimae." The performance was met with critical acclaim, with The Guardian describing it as "a performance of great intensity and beauty." Meta4 has also been recognized for their recordings, with their album of works by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho receiving the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in 2011. The quartet has also recorded works by Sibelius, Beethoven, and Schubert, among others. In addition to their performances and recordings, Meta4 is also committed to promoting classical music to a wider audience. They have worked with young musicians in Finland and have given masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world.
