He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Protti began his musical training at a young age and studied at the Conservatory of Milan. He made his debut in 1948 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he performed the role of Marcello in Puccini's La Bohème. Protti quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. He went on to perform in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He was particularly renowned for his performances in Verdi's operas, including Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata. One of Protti's most memorable performances was in 1951, when he sang the role of Rigoletto at the Salzburg Festival. His performance was widely praised, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. He went on to perform at the festival for many years, becoming one of its most beloved performers. Protti also received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1953, he was awarded the prestigious Viotti d'Oro prize for his performance in Verdi's Macbeth. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960 for his contributions to Italian culture. Protti continued to perform well into his seventies, and his final performance was in 1995, when he sang the role of Giorgio Germont in La Traviata at the Teatro alla Scala.
