The Wiener Jeunesse-Chor, also known as the Vienna Youth Choir, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. The choir was founded in 1946 by Hans Gillesberger, a prominent Austrian conductor and music educator, with the aim of providing young singers with the opportunity to perform choral music at a high level. The choir started out as a small group of around 30 singers, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Under Gillesberger's leadership, the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor became known for its exceptional musicality and technical proficiency, as well as its commitment to promoting the works of contemporary composers. Over the years, the choir has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Musikverein, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and orchestras, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor's career was their performance at the opening ceremony of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The choir was invited to represent Austria at the event, and their performance of the Olympic Hymn was widely praised for its beauty and precision. In addition to their many performances, the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1952, they were awarded the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy, and in 1962 they were awarded the Austrian State Prize for Music. Despite the many changes in personnel and leadership over the years, the Wiener Jeunesse-Chor has remained committed to its founding principles of excellence in choral music and the promotion of young talent. Today, the choir continues to perform regularly in Vienna and around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the finest youth choirs in the world.
