The Altenberg Trio Wien is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 in Vienna, Austria. The trio consists of violinist Amiram Ganz, cellist Alexander Gebert, and pianist Claus-Christian Schuster. The ensemble is named after the Altenberg Trio, a group of composers who were active in Vienna in the early 20th century. The Altenberg Trio Wien has gained international recognition for their performances of classical music, particularly the works of Austrian composers such as Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Anton Webern. The trio has also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers, including Johannes Maria Staud, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Beat Furrer. The founding members of the Altenberg Trio Wien, Ganz, Gebert, and Schuster, met while studying at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. They formed the ensemble with the goal of exploring the rich tradition of Viennese classical music and bringing it to audiences around the world. Since their founding, the Altenberg Trio Wien has performed at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. They have collaborated with renowned musicians such as clarinetist Sabine Meyer, violist Tabea Zimmermann, and pianist Till Fellner. One of the highlights of the Altenberg Trio Wien's career was their performance at the Salzburg Festival in 2000. The trio performed a program of works by Schubert, including his Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major. The performance was widely praised by critics and established the Altenberg Trio Wien as one of the leading ensembles in the classical music world. In addition to their performances, the Altenberg Trio Wien has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. They have recorded for major labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and Challenge Records, and have won several awards for their recordings of Schubert's piano trios. The Altenberg Trio Wien has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians around the world, and have worked with organizations such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's "Philharmonic Academy" program to promote classical music to a wider audience. In recent years, the Altenberg Trio Wien has continued to expand their repertoire and explore new directions in classical music. They have collaborated with jazz musicians and performed works by contemporary composers that incorporate elements of improvisation and experimentation. Despite their many accomplishments, the Altenberg Trio Wien remains committed to their original mission of bringing the rich tradition of Viennese classical music to audiences around the world. Through their performances, recordings, and educational initiatives, they continue to inspire and engage audiences with the beauty and power of classical music.
