The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) is a classical music ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1996 by conductor Gil Rose, BMOP is dedicated to performing and recording contemporary classical music. Over the years, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and innovative ensembles in the United States. The birth of BMOP can be traced back to Gil Rose's desire to create an orchestra that would focus exclusively on contemporary classical music. Rose, who had previously worked with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera, felt that there was a lack of attention given to new music in the classical music world. He wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the work of living composers and bring their music to a wider audience. In 1996, Rose founded BMOP with a group of like-minded musicians. The orchestra's first concert was held in 1997, and it featured the music of John Harbison, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who had been a mentor to Rose. The concert was a success, and BMOP quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Over the years, BMOP has performed the work of many of the most important contemporary composers, including John Adams, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered new works by a wide range of composers, from established figures like John Harbison and Elliott Carter to up-and-coming talents like Hannah Lash and Andrew Norman. One of the highlights of BMOP's history was the orchestra's performance of John Adams' opera "Nixon in China" in 2009. The performance, which was held at the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston, was a major event in the classical music world. It was the first time that "Nixon in China" had been performed in Boston, and it was widely praised for its high-quality performances and innovative staging. In addition to its performances, BMOP has also been recognized for its recordings. The orchestra has released over 70 recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim. In 2018, BMOP won a Grammy Award for its recording of "The Rake's Progress" by Igor Stravinsky. BMOP has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The orchestra has worked with a wide range of educational institutions, from elementary schools to universities, to bring contemporary classical music to students of all ages. BMOP has also worked with a number of community organizations to bring its music to underserved communities. Today, BMOP is one of the most respected and innovative classical music ensembles in the United States. The orchestra continues to perform and record contemporary classical music, and it remains committed to bringing this music to a wider audience. With its innovative programming, high-quality performances, and commitment to education and outreach, BMOP is sure to remain a major force in the classical music world for years to come.
