He was born on August 23, 1955, in Cooperstown, New York, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church choir director, and his mother was a pianist. Croft's love for music began at a young age, and he started singing in his church choir when he was just six years old. Croft attended the State University of New York at Potsdam, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance. During his time at Juilliard, Croft studied under the tutelage of renowned vocal coach Beverley Peck Johnson. After completing his studies, Croft made his professional debut in 1985 at the New York City Opera, where he performed the role of Schaunard in Puccini's "La Bohème."
