Artist Info
Genre:ConcertoThe Zürcher Kammerorchester (Zurich Chamber Orchestra) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 1945, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The Zürcher Kammerorchester was founded by Edmond de Stoutz, a Swiss conductor and violinist. De Stoutz had studied music in Paris and had worked with renowned conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan. He was passionate about chamber music and wanted to create an ensemble that would focus on this genre. The orchestra's first concert was held in 1945, and it quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances. The ensemble's early repertoire included works by Bach, Mozart, and Haydn, as well as contemporary composers such as Stravinsky and Bartók. Over the years, the Zürcher Kammerorchester has collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists and conductors. Some of the most notable musicians who have worked with the orchestra include Yehudi Menuhin, Heinz Holliger, and Martha Argerich. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the Lucerne Festival in 1956. The ensemble played under the baton of Igor Stravinsky, who was so impressed with their musicianship that he invited them to perform with him again the following year. In 1965, the Zürcher Kammerorchester embarked on its first international tour, which included concerts in Germany, Austria, and Italy. The tour was a great success, and the orchestra has since performed in many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Zürcher Kammerorchester has also been recognized for its recordings. The ensemble has released over 100 albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. In 2003, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance for its recording of Stravinsky's "Apollo" and "Concerto in D." The orchestra has undergone several changes in leadership over the years. After Edmond de Stoutz's death in 1989, Howard Griffiths became the orchestra's principal conductor. He was succeeded by Sir Roger Norrington in 2011, who held the position until 2016. Since then, the orchestra has been led by several guest conductors, including Daniel Hope and Sir András Schiff. Today, the Zürcher Kammerorchester continues to be a leading chamber orchestra, known for its innovative programming and exceptional musicianship. The ensemble's repertoire includes works from the Baroque era to contemporary music, and it is committed to promoting new music and supporting emerging composers. In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including jazz pianist Brad Mehldau and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. The ensemble has also been involved in several educational initiatives, including a program that brings classical music to schools in Zurich. The Zürcher Kammerorchester has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In addition to its Grammy Award, the orchestra has been honored with the Swiss Music Prize and the Echo Klassik Award. The ensemble's recordings have also been recognized by the International Classical Music Awards and the Diapason d'Or.More....
