He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Berrettoni was exposed to music and showed a natural talent for it. Berrettoni began his formal music education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly progressed and showed a great interest in classical music. At the age of ten, he started studying the violin, which became his primary instrument. He continued to study both the piano and the violin throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 1950, Berrettoni enrolled at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, one of the most prestigious music schools in Italy. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time, including Alfredo Casella and Franco Ferrara. During his time at the academy, Berrettoni honed his skills as a violinist and developed a deep understanding of classical music. After graduating from the academy, Berrettoni began his professional career as a violinist. He joined the Rome Symphony Orchestra and quickly established himself as one of the most talented musicians in the group. He also started performing as a soloist, playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Italy and Europe. Berrettoni's talent as a violinist was recognized by the music world, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1958, he won the prestigious Paganini Competition in Genoa, Italy, which is considered one of the most challenging violin competitions in the world. This win catapulted Berrettoni to international fame, and he started receiving invitations to perform in concerts and festivals all over the world. One of the highlights of Berrettoni's career was his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1962. He was invited to perform as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. His performance was a huge success, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance cemented Berrettoni's reputation as one of the greatest violinists of his time. Berrettoni continued to perform and record throughout the 1960s and 1970s, collaborating with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras in the world. He also started teaching at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, passing on his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of musicians. In 1980, Berrettoni retired from performing and focused on teaching and conducting. He became the director of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in 1983, a position he held until 1992. During his tenure as director, he implemented several reforms that modernized the academy and made it more accessible to young musicians. Berrettoni's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized by the Italian government, and he was awarded the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. He also received numerous other awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
