Artist Info
Chineke! Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 by Chi-chi Nwanoku, a British-Nigerian double bassist. The orchestra is made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds, with a particular focus on promoting ethnic diversity in classical music. Nwanoku was inspired to create the orchestra after noticing the lack of diversity in classical music, both in terms of the musicians and the repertoire. She wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the talents of musicians from all backgrounds and provide a platform for underrepresented composers. The orchestra's name, "Chineke," means "God" in the Igbo language of Nigeria. Nwanoku chose the name to reflect the orchestra's mission of promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music. The ensemble's members come from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities, including Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and the United Kingdom. Many of the musicians have performed with major orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Chineke! Orchestra has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the Southbank Centre in London. The ensemble has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Germany, Austria, and the United States. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was at the 2017 BBC Proms, where they became the first majority-black and minority ethnic orchestra to perform at the event. The concert featured works by composers such as George Walker, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Jean Sibelius. Chineke! Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work promoting diversity in classical music. In 2017, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gamechanger Award, which recognizes individuals and ensembles who have made a significant contribution to classical music. The orchestra has also been recognized for their work with young musicians. They have established a mentoring program for young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds, providing them with opportunities to perform and receive guidance from professional musicians. In addition to their performances, Chineke! Orchestra has also released several recordings, including their debut album, "Chineke!," which features works by composers such as Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges and George Walker. Overall, Chineke! Orchestra has made a significant impact on the classical music world, promoting diversity and inclusivity in a genre that has historically been dominated by white, male musicians. Through their performances, recordings, and mentoring programs, they have inspired a new generation of musicians and helped to create a more diverse and inclusive classical music community.More....
