Role:EnsembleThe West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1999 by the Argentine-Israeli conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim and the Palestinian-American literary scholar Edward Said. The orchestra is composed of young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and other Middle Eastern countries, as well as from Spain and Germany. The idea for the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was born out of Barenboim and Said's shared belief that music can be a powerful tool for promoting understanding and dialogue between different cultures and peoples. They envisioned an orchestra that would bring together young musicians from across the Middle East to collaborate and perform together, breaking down barriers and fostering mutual respect and understanding. The name of the orchestra is inspired by a collection of poems by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, called the West-östlicher Divan, which explores the themes of East and West, and the meeting of different cultures. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra made its debut in Weimar, Germany, in August 1999, with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The concert was a resounding success, and the orchestra quickly gained international recognition for its unique mission and exceptional musicianship. Over the years, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Pierre Boulez. One of the highlights of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra's career was its performance at the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, where it played Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as a symbol of hope and unity. The concert was attended by world leaders and diplomats, and was broadcast live to millions of people around the world. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors for its contributions to music and intercultural dialogue. In 2004, the orchestra was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, one of Spain's highest honors. In 2010, it received the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize, and in 2012, it was awarded the Wolf Prize in Arts, one of Israel's most prestigious awards. Despite the many challenges and obstacles that the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has faced over the years, including political tensions and security concerns, the orchestra has remained committed to its mission of promoting peace and understanding through music. Its members continue to inspire audiences around the world with their exceptional musicianship and their message of hope and unity.More....
