New World Symphony is a classical music ensemble based in Miami Beach, Florida. It was founded in 1987 by Michael Tilson Thomas, a renowned conductor and pianist, with the aim of providing advanced training and performance opportunities to young musicians. The ensemble has since become one of the most prominent and innovative orchestras in the United States, known for its commitment to contemporary music and its use of technology in performance. The founding of New World Symphony was inspired by Tilson Thomas's own experiences as a young musician. He had studied at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles, but felt that he lacked the practical skills and experience needed to succeed as a professional musician. He believed that there was a need for a new kind of training program that would bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice, and provide young musicians with the tools they needed to succeed in the competitive world of classical music. To realize this vision, Tilson Thomas partnered with a group of philanthropists and arts organizations in Miami Beach, including the City of Miami Beach, the Miami Beach Redevelopment Agency, and the Knight Foundation. Together, they raised funds to build a state-of-the-art facility that would serve as the home of the New World Symphony and provide a range of training and performance opportunities to its members. The New World Symphony's main members are its fellows, a group of young musicians who are selected through a highly competitive audition process. The fellowship program is designed to provide these musicians with a comprehensive education in orchestral performance, including coaching, rehearsals, and performance opportunities with the New World Symphony and other professional orchestras. The program also includes a range of professional development activities, such as workshops on entrepreneurship, leadership, and community engagement. Over the years, the New World Symphony has become known for its innovative approach to classical music performance. One of its signature programs is the "Wallcast," a series of outdoor concerts that are broadcast live on a large screen outside the New World Center. These concerts are free and open to the public, and have become a popular cultural event in Miami Beach. The New World Symphony has also embraced technology in its performances, using video projections, lighting effects, and other multimedia elements to enhance the audience's experience. The New World Symphony has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. It has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians and composers of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and John Adams. In 2011, the New World Symphony was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts organizations in the United States. One of the highlights of the New World Symphony's history was its performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, which was watched by an estimated 1 billion people around the world. The New World Symphony performed a piece by Chinese composer Tan Dun, accompanied by a stunning visual display that featured thousands of performers and a giant LED screen.
