He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won several prestigious competitions and performed in major concert halls throughout Europe. O'Hora's musical education was extensive and rigorous. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, where he was mentored by the renowned pianist John O'Conor. He later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received a scholarship to study with the legendary pianist Maria João Pires. O'Hora's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the 1980s, when he won several major competitions, including the Dublin International Piano Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy.
