United KingdomBirth:December 31, 1961Period:RenaissanceGenre:ChoralAndrew Kirkman is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the field of early music. He was born in the United Kingdom in 1969 and grew up in a family that valued music. His parents were both amateur musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music from a young age. Kirkman began his musical education at the age of seven when he started learning the piano. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of ten. He continued to study the piano throughout his teenage years and also began to explore other instruments, including the violin and the recorder. In 1987, Kirkman enrolled at the University of Oxford to study music. It was here that he discovered his love for early music, particularly the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He was fascinated by the complexity and beauty of this music and began to specialize in it. After completing his undergraduate degree, Kirkman went on to study for a PhD in musicology at the University of Cambridge. His research focused on the music of the English composer John Taverner, and he became an expert in this area. He also continued to perform as a musician, playing the recorder and other early instruments in various ensembles. In 1996, Kirkman was appointed as a lecturer in music at the University of Manchester. He continued to teach and perform, and in 2001 he founded the Binchois Consort, an early music ensemble that specializes in the music of the 15th century. The group quickly gained a reputation for their high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, Kirkman and the Binchois Consort have performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. They have also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the music of Guillaume Dufay. Kirkman's contributions to the field of early music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Early Music Award by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. He has also been awarded fellowships by the Royal Society of Arts and the British Academy. In addition to his work with the Binchois Consort, Kirkman has also been involved in other early music projects. He has worked with the Tallis Scholars, one of the world's leading early music ensembles, and has conducted the choir of King's College, Cambridge. Kirkman is also a prolific writer and has published several books and articles on early music. His research has focused on a wide range of topics, including the music of John Taverner, the history of the recorder, and the performance practice of early music. In recent years, Kirkman has continued to perform and teach, and he remains a leading figure in the world of early music. His contributions to the field have helped to bring this beautiful and complex music to a wider audience, and his work will continue to inspire musicians and music lovers for generations to come.More....
