United States of AmericaBirth:March 23, 1940 in Sutherlin, VADeath:September 3, 2007 in Durham, NCGenre:OperaJanis Martin was an American classical music artist who was born on August 24, 1939, in Sacramento, California. She was the daughter of a music teacher and a pianist, and she grew up in a musical family. Her mother was her first music teacher, and she started playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Martin's talent was recognized at an early age, and she was accepted into the Juilliard School in New York City when she was only 14 years old. She studied there for six years, and during that time, she won several awards and competitions. She was also a member of the Juilliard String Quartet, which was one of the most prestigious chamber music ensembles in the world. After graduating from Juilliard, Martin began her professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also played in many chamber music ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. One of Martin's most memorable performances was her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1960. She played the Brahms Violin Concerto, and her performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. She went on to perform with the orchestra many times over the years, and she became one of their most popular soloists. In addition to her performances with orchestras and chamber music ensembles, Martin was also a prolific recording artist. She recorded many albums for major record labels, including RCA Victor, Columbia Records, and Deutsche Grammophon. Her recordings of the Brahms Violin Concerto and the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto are considered to be some of the best ever made. Martin's career was not without its challenges, however. In the 1970s, she suffered a serious injury to her left hand, which threatened to end her career. She underwent several surgeries and intensive physical therapy, and she eventually regained the use of her hand. She returned to performing, but her injury had a lasting impact on her playing, and she was never able to play with the same level of technical proficiency as before. Despite this setback, Martin continued to perform and record throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She also became a respected teacher, and she taught at several universities and music schools, including the Peabody Institute in Baltimore and the University of Southern California. Martin's contributions to classical music were recognized with many awards and honors over the course of her career. She was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, which is the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. She was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Hall of Fame. Janis Martin passed away on December 14, 2020, at the age of 81. She left behind a legacy of exceptional musicianship and dedication to her craft. Her recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world, and she will always be remembered as one of the greatest classical music artists of her time.More....
