Born on January 18, 1910, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Solomon showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Solomon's career as a conductor began in the 1930s when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
