Gregory Yurisich is a renowned Australian bass-baritone opera singer who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on 22nd May 1951 in Perth, Western Australia, Yurisich grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Yurisich started singing at a young age and showed a keen interest in music. He attended the University of Western Australia, where he studied music and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Yurisich's career in music began in the early 1970s when he joined the West Australian Opera Company. He made his debut in 1974 as the Commendatore in Mozart's Don Giovanni. His performance was well-received, and he quickly established himself as a talented singer. In 1975, he won the prestigious Mobil Song Quest, which was a national singing competition in Australia. This win gave him the opportunity to study in London with renowned vocal coach Vera Rozsa. In 1977, Yurisich made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London as the King in Verdi's Aida. This performance was a turning point in his career, and he received critical acclaim for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. He went on to perform in several other productions at the Royal Opera House, including Verdi's Otello and Don Carlos, and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Yurisich's international career took off in the 1980s when he started performing in major opera houses around the world. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1982 as the Grand Inquisitor in Verdi's Don Carlo. He went on to perform in several other productions at the Met, including Verdi's Rigoletto and Aida, and Wagner's Parsifal. Yurisich's repertoire includes a wide range of operas, from Mozart to Wagner. He is particularly known for his performances in Verdi's operas, and he has been praised for his ability to convey the emotional depth of the characters he portrays. He has also performed in several contemporary operas, including John Adams' Nixon in China and Philip Glass' Satyagraha. Yurisich has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to music. He has also been awarded the Centenary Medal and the Queen's Jubilee Medal. In 1991, he was made a Knight of the Order of St. John, and in 2002, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. Yurisich has also been recognized for his work as a teacher and mentor. He has taught at several music schools and universities, including the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has also served as a judge for several singing competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In addition to his work in opera, Yurisich has also performed in concerts and recitals. He has collaborated with several renowned conductors, including Sir Georg Solti and Zubin Mehta.
