He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. At a young age, he showed a great interest in music and began studying piano with his father. He later studied at the Madrid Conservatory, where he received a degree in piano and composition. Argenta began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts throughout Spain. However, he soon realized that his true passion was conducting, and he began to focus on this aspect of music. He conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. One of the highlights of Argenta's career was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in 1953. He transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in Spain and led it on several successful tours throughout Europe. He also conducted the Spanish National Orchestra and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra. Argenta was known for his interpretations of the works of Spanish composers, such as Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. He was also awarded the Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, one of Spain's highest honors, for his contributions to Spanish culture.
