She was the daughter of a French father and a Spanish mother. Her father was a music lover and introduced her to classical music at a young age. Crespin began singing in church choirs and local operettas as a child. Crespin studied at the Marseille Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory. She made her professional debut in 1950 at the Opéra de Marseille as Mimì in La bohème. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. In 1952, Crespin made her debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Charlotte in Werther. She also made her debut at the Paris Opera in 1953 as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She became a regular performer at both of these prestigious opera houses. Crespin's international career began in 1958 when she made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London as Marguerite in Faust. She also made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1962 as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. She quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike. Crespin was known for her powerful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of French opera, including the works of Debussy, Ravel, and Berlioz. She was also known for her performances of Wagner's operas, including Tristan und Isolde and Die Walküre. Crespin received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1961, she was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recording of Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été. She was also awarded the Legion of Honor in 1973 and was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1985. One of Crespin's most memorable performances was her portrayal of Kundry in Wagner's Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival in 1964. Her performance was widely praised and cemented her reputation as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of her time. Crespin retired from the stage in 1989 but continued to teach and mentor young singers. She passed away on July 5, 2007, at the age of 80.
