Period:RomanticGenre:ChoralThe Uppsala University Chamber Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1947, the choir has established itself as one of the leading choral groups in Scandinavia, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The choir was founded by Eric Ericson, a Swedish choral conductor and composer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of choral music. Ericson was a professor of choral conducting at Uppsala University, and he founded the choir as a way to provide his students with practical experience in choral singing and conducting. From its earliest days, the Uppsala University Chamber Choir was known for its high standards of musicianship and its commitment to performing a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The choir quickly gained a reputation for its precision and clarity of sound, as well as its ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of the music it performed. Over the years, the choir has had many distinguished members, including several who have gone on to become prominent choral conductors and composers in their own right. Some of the most notable members of the choir include Stefan Parkman, who served as the choir's conductor from 1983 to 1994 and went on to become the chief conductor of the Danish National Radio Choir; Cecilia Rydinger Alin, a composer and conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading choral ensembles; and Anders Eby, a composer and conductor who has written numerous works for the choir. The Uppsala University Chamber Choir has performed extensively throughout Sweden and around the world, earning critical acclaim for its performances and recordings. Some of the choir's most notable performances include its appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms, as well as its collaborations with leading orchestras such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. The choir has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years, including several prestigious prizes at international choral competitions. In 1964, the choir won first prize at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy, and in 1972, it won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. The choir has also won several Swedish Grammy Awards for its recordings, including awards for its performances of works by Bach, Brahms, and Sven-David Sandström. One of the choir's most notable achievements was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 2000, which was widely regarded as one of the most significant choral performances of the year. The performance, which was conducted by Stefan Parkman and featured soloists such as Anne Sofie von Otter and Thomas Quasthoff, was praised for its emotional intensity and its faithful interpretation of Bach's complex and challenging score. In recent years, the Uppsala University Chamber Choir has continued to build on its legacy of excellence, performing a wide range of choral music and collaborating with some of the world's leading musicians and ensembles. The choir's current conductor, Cecilia Rydinger Alin, has been praised for her innovative programming and her commitment to exploring new and challenging repertoire.More....
