Jennie Tourel was a renowned mezzo-soprano and one of the most celebrated classical music artists of the 20th century. Born on April 22, 1900, in Vitebsk, Russia, Tourel was the daughter of a cantor and grew up in a musical family. She began singing at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Tourel's family moved to Paris when she was a child, and she received her early musical training there. Tourel's musical career began in earnest in the 1920s when she began performing in Parisian cabarets and nightclubs. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented singer and was soon performing in some of the city's most prestigious venues. In 1926, Tourel made her operatic debut in Paris, singing the role of Carmen in Georges Bizet's famous opera. The performance was a great success, and Tourel's career as an opera singer was launched. Over the next few years, Tourel continued to perform in Paris and other European cities, building a reputation as one of the most talented mezzo-sopranos of her generation. In 1937, she made her American debut, performing in New York City's Town Hall. The performance was a great success, and Tourel soon became a regular performer in the United States. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Tourel continued to perform in both Europe and the United States, becoming one of the most sought-after mezzo-sopranos of her time. She performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. One of Tourel's most famous performances was in the role of Klytemnestra in Richard Strauss's opera Elektra. Tourel continued to perform well into her 70s, and her final performance was in 1973, at the age of 73. She died on November 23, 1973, in New York City, at the age of 73.
