Tara Helen O'Connor is a renowned flutist and professor of music at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music. She was born on May 23, 1963, in Freeport, New York, and grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer. O'Connor began playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. O'Connor's early musical education was guided by her parents, who encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with flutist Julius Baker. After completing her undergraduate degree, O'Connor went on to earn a master's degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with flutist Samuel Baron. Throughout her career, O'Connor has been recognized for her exceptional talent and dedication to the flute. She has won numerous awards and accolades, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. In 2001, she was named a fellow of the American Academy in Rome. O'Connor has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She has also collaborated with many renowned composers, including John Adams, Elliott Carter, and Kaija Saariaho. One of O'Connor's most notable performances was her solo debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1996. She performed the world premiere of John Harbison's "Mirabai Songs," a piece written specifically for her. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted O'Connor's "dazzling technique" and "expressive playing." In addition to her performing career, O'Connor is also a highly respected educator. She has taught at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music since 2001 and has also served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. Her students have gone on to successful careers in music, performing with major orchestras and ensembles around the world. O'Connor is also a passionate advocate for new music and has commissioned and premiered many new works for the flute. She has worked closely with composers such as Aaron Jay Kernis, Jennifer Higdon, and Paul Moravec to create new pieces that showcase the versatility and beauty of the flute. Throughout her career, O'Connor has remained committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new avenues of expression. Her dedication to her craft and her passion for music have made her one of the most respected and admired flutists of her generation.
