Born on January 1, 1957, in Portsmouth, England, Michaels-Moore grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Michaels-Moore showed a keen interest in music and began singing in his school choir. Michaels-Moore's musical education began at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied under the tutelage of Frederic Cox. He later continued his studies at the National Opera Studio in London, where he received further training in opera performance. Michaels-Moore's professional career began in 1981 when he made his debut with the English National Opera in the role of Schaunard in Puccini's La bohème. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, and soon began performing with other major opera companies around the world. One of Michaels-Moore's most notable performances was in the role of Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca, which he first performed at the Royal Opera House in London in 1992. His portrayal of the villainous Scarpia was widely praised for its intensity and dramatic flair, and he went on to perform the role in many other productions around the world. Michaels-Moore has also had great success in the role of Rigoletto in Verdi's eponymous opera. He first performed the role at the Royal Opera House in 1997, and has since gone on to perform it in many other productions, including at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Paris Opera. In addition to his work in opera, Michaels-Moore has also performed in many concerts and recitals. He has collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In 1993, he was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in the West End production of Les Misérables.
