Genre:ConcertoThe Manhattan Chamber Orchestra (MCO) is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 1987 by conductor Richard Auldon Clark, the MCO has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Richard Auldon Clark, a graduate of the Juilliard School, founded the MCO with the goal of creating a chamber orchestra that would showcase the talents of young musicians and promote the performance of contemporary music. The ensemble's first concert was held in 1987 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City. Over the years, the MCO has attracted a diverse group of musicians, including both established professionals and up-and-coming talent. The ensemble's core members include violinists Belinda Whitney-Barratt and Laura Hamilton, violist Brett Deubner, cellist Stephanie Cummins, and pianist Margaret Kampmeier. One of the MCO's defining characteristics is its commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has premiered numerous works by living composers, including John Corigliano, Joan Tower, and Richard Danielpour. In addition to contemporary music, the MCO also performs a wide range of classical repertoire, from Baroque to Romantic. The MCO has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, earning critical acclaim for its performances. One of the MCO's most notable performances was its 1995 concert at Carnegie Hall, which featured the world premiere of John Corigliano's "Phantasmagoria." The piece, which was commissioned by the MCO, was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the ensemble as a leading force in contemporary music. In addition to its performances, the MCO has also received numerous awards and accolades. The ensemble was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 1998, and has been praised by critics for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Despite its success, the MCO has faced its share of challenges over the years. In 2003, the ensemble was forced to cancel several concerts due to financial difficulties. However, the MCO was able to rebound from this setback, and has continued to thrive in the years since. Today, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra remains a vital force in the world of classical music. With its commitment to contemporary music and innovative programming, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music, and inspire audiences around the world.More....
