His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Sperlbauer showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Sperlbauer's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He also studied composition with renowned Austrian composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen. In 1965, Sperlbauer made his debut as a solo pianist at the Vienna Musikverein. The performance was a huge success, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young pianists in Austria. He went on to perform at major concert halls throughout Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Sperlbauer's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin.
