Sébastien d’Hérin is a renowned French conductor and harpsichordist, known for his exceptional performances of Baroque and Classical music. Born on May 23, 1969, in Paris, France, d’Hérin showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the harpsichord, which became his primary instrument. D’Hérin received his musical education at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he studied harpsichord with Kenneth Gilbert and Christophe Rousset. He also studied conducting with Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös. After completing his studies, d’Hérin began his career as a freelance harpsichordist and conductor, performing with various ensembles and orchestras in France and abroad. In 1991, d’Hérin founded the ensemble Les Nouveaux Caractères, which specializes in the performance of Baroque and Classical music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances, and has since become one of the leading Baroque ensembles in France. D’Hérin serves as the artistic director and conductor of the ensemble, and has led them in numerous performances and recordings. D’Hérin’s performances are characterized by their energy, precision, and attention to detail. He is known for his ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of Baroque and Classical music, and for his skillful interpretation of the works of composers such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart. His performances have been praised for their clarity, elegance, and emotional depth. D’Hérin has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and violinist Isabelle Faust. One of d’Hérin’s most notable performances was his 2010 production of Handel’s opera Giulio Cesare at the Opéra de Lille. The production was praised for its innovative staging and outstanding musical performances, and was later released on DVD. D’Hérin has also conducted numerous other operas, including Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte, and Handel’s Alcina. In addition to his work as a conductor and harpsichordist, d’Hérin is also a respected musicologist and scholar. He has published several articles and books on Baroque and Classical music, and has given lectures and masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world. D’Hérin has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 2003, he was awarded the Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour le chant choral, and in 2010 he received the Prix des Muses for his recording of Handel’s opera Rinaldo. He has also been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for his services to the arts. Despite his many accomplishments, d’Hérin remains dedicated to his craft and continues to push the boundaries of Baroque and Classical music.
