He was the son of a wealthy merchant, and his family had a strong musical tradition. His father, Nicolas Desmarest, was a skilled amateur musician who played the viola da gamba, and his mother, Marie-Anne, was a singer. Desmarest showed an early talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He received his first musical education from his father, who taught him to play the viola da gamba and the harpsichord. He also received singing lessons from his mother, who had a beautiful soprano voice. At the age of 14, Desmarest was sent to Paris to study music with the famous composer Jean-Baptiste Lully. Lully was the court composer to King Louis XIV and was considered the most important composer of his time. Desmarest studied with Lully for several years and learned the art of composing music for the stage. Desmarest's first major success came in 1693 when he composed the opera "Didon." The opera was a huge success and was performed at the court of Louis XIV. The king was so impressed with Desmarest's work that he appointed him as the court composer. Desmarest went on to compose several more operas, including "Théagène et Chariclée" (1695), "Les Éléments" (1698), and "Vénus et Adonis" (1699). His operas were known for their beautiful melodies, dramatic intensity, and innovative use of orchestration. In addition to his operas, Desmarest also composed several sacred works, including "Grands Motets" and "Petits Motets." These works were written for the royal chapel and were performed during religious services at the court of Louis XIV. Desmarest's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the most important composers of his time. His music was known for its emotional intensity, beautiful melodies, and innovative use of harmony and orchestration. Despite his success, Desmarest's life was not without its challenges. He suffered from poor health throughout his life and was often in debt. He also had a difficult relationship with his wife, who was known for her temper and jealousy. Desmarest died on September 7, 1741, in Lyon, France. He was 80 years old. Despite his many challenges, he left behind a rich legacy of music that continues to be performed and admired to this day.More....
