Giovanni Battista Fontana was a prominent Italian composer and violinist of the Baroque era. He was born in Brescia, Italy, in 1571, and little is known about his early life and musical training. However, it is believed that he received his musical education in Venice, which was a hub of musical activity during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Fontana's career as a musician began in the early 1600s when he was appointed as a violinist at the court of the Duke of Mantua. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled performer and composer, and his music was highly regarded by his contemporaries. In addition to his work at the court, Fontana also performed in various churches and other venues throughout Italy. One of Fontana's most significant contributions to music was his development of the sonata, a musical form that would become a staple of Baroque music. His sonatas were characterized by their use of multiple movements, each with its own distinct mood and tempo. Fontana's sonatas were also notable for their use of virtuosic violin passages, which showcased the technical abilities of the performer. This collection, titled "Sonate a 1.2.3. per il violino, o cornetto, fagotto, chitarone, violoncino o simile altro istromento," contains 18 sonatas that are considered to be some of the finest examples of Baroque music. The collection includes a variety of styles and moods, ranging from lively dance movements to contemplative adagios. In addition to his sonatas, Fontana also composed a number of other works, including canzonas, sinfonias, and other instrumental pieces. His music was highly influential in the development of Baroque music, and his sonatas in particular were widely imitated by other composers of the time. Despite his significant contributions to music, Fontana's life and career are somewhat shrouded in mystery.
