Born in Scotland in 1966, Thomson showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1988. After completing his studies, Thomson began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Scotland and England. He quickly gained a reputation for his dynamic and expressive conducting style, and was soon invited to conduct orchestras in Europe and the United States. One of Thomson's early highlights as a conductor came in 1994, when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. During his tenure with the orchestra, Thomson led numerous successful performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete symphonies of Sir William Walton. In addition to his work as a conductor, Thomson is also an accomplished composer. His compositions have been performed by orchestras around the world, and he has received numerous awards and commissions for his work. One of his most notable compositions is his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and premiered in 2002. Thomson's work with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra was recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Silpathorn Award from the Thai Ministry of Culture in 2015. He was also awarded the Medal of Honour for Culture from the Thai government in 2019, in recognition of his contributions to the development of classical music in Thailand. In addition to his work with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Thomson has also conducted numerous other orchestras around the world, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as a guest conductor at numerous music festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. Thomson's career as a composer has also continued to flourish, with numerous commissions and performances of his work in recent years. In 2019, he was commissioned by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to compose a new work for their 125th anniversary season, which was premiered to critical acclaim.
