Almeida Prado was a Brazilian composer and pianist who was born on July 8, 1943, in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil. He was the son of a composer and conductor, Almeida Prado Sr., who was also a professor of music at the São Paulo Conservatory. Prado Jr. grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He showed great talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Prado studied at the São Paulo Conservatory and later at the University of São Paulo, where he earned a degree in composition. He also studied with renowned composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Nadia Boulanger, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Prado's music was heavily influenced by his studies with these composers, as well as by Brazilian folk music and the natural environment of Brazil. Prado's early works were characterized by their experimental nature and their use of unconventional techniques. He was interested in exploring the limits of sound and often used extended techniques on the piano, such as playing inside the instrument or using objects to alter the sound. His early works also showed a strong influence from the avant-garde movement, with their use of dissonance and complex rhythms. In the 1970s, Prado began to incorporate more traditional elements into his music, such as tonality and melody. He also began to focus more on the piano as a solo instrument, and many of his works from this period were written for solo piano. One of his most famous works from this period is his Piano Sonata No. 1, which was written in 1975 and is considered a masterpiece of Brazilian piano music. Throughout his career, Prado was known for his use of nature as a source of inspiration for his music. He often wrote pieces that were inspired by the natural environment of Brazil, such as his Amazonas Suite, which was written in 1989 and is based on the sounds and rhythms of the Amazon rainforest. He also wrote several works that were inspired by the sea, such as his Oceanides Suite, which was written in 1992 and is based on the sounds and rhythms of the ocean. Prado's music was widely performed and recorded throughout Brazil and internationally. He won numerous awards for his compositions, including the São Paulo State Prize for Music in 1982 and the Carlos Gomes Prize for Music in 1991. He was also a professor of composition at the University of São Paulo and was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music. Prado continued to compose and perform until his death on November 21, 2010, at the age of 67. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music that continues to be celebrated and performed today.
