Pi-Hsien Chen is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and sensitive interpretations of the classical repertoire. Born in Taiwan in 1969, Chen began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the National Taiwan Normal University and the Juilliard School in New York, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. Chen's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the early 1990s, when she won several prestigious international competitions, including the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1996 and the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 1997. These victories brought her to the attention of the classical music world and established her as one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. Since then, Chen has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Zubin Mehta. Her repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, among others. One of the highlights of Chen's career was her performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms in 2001. The concert was broadcast live on television and radio and received widespread critical acclaim. The Guardian praised Chen's "dazzling technique and deep musicality," while The Times called her performance "a revelation." Chen has also made several highly acclaimed recordings, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas for the Avie label. Her recording of the sonatas was praised for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth" by Gramophone magazine, and was named one of the best classical recordings of the year by The New York Times. In addition to her performing career, Chen is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. She is known for her thoughtful and insightful approach to teaching, and has mentored many young pianists who have gone on to successful careers in their own right. Chen's numerous awards and accolades include the Order of Cultural Merit from the government of Taiwan, the Medal of Cultural Merit from the government of Spain, and the Medal of Honor from the government of Austria. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and an Honorary Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Despite her many achievements, Chen remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform regularly around the world and is always seeking new ways to deepen her understanding of the music she loves.
