Artist Info
Genre:OperaVocalCharles Craig was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 7, 1929, in Glasgow, Scotland. He was the son of a coal miner and grew up in a working-class family. Despite the financial challenges, Craig's parents recognized his musical talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Craig began his musical training at the age of 11 when he joined the choir of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow. He quickly became a soloist in the choir and was soon noticed by the conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra, who offered him a scholarship to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Craig's talent as a tenor was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his powerful and expressive voice. He made his professional debut in 1953, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. This performance was a huge success, and Craig's career took off from there. Over the next few years, Craig performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. He was particularly renowned for his performances in the operas of Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini, and his interpretations of roles such as Don Giovanni, Rodolfo, and Cavaradossi were widely praised. Craig's performances were not limited to the opera stage, however. He was also a highly sought-after concert performer, and he sang with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was particularly renowned for his performances of the works of Bach, Handel, and Schubert, and his recordings of these composers' works remain highly regarded to this day. Throughout his career, Craig received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1961, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music, and in 1975, he was made a Knight Bachelor. He was also awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal in 1980, and in 1990, he was awarded the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II. Despite his many achievements, Craig remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his career. He was known for his tireless work ethic and his commitment to his art, and he continued to perform well into his seventies. He retired from the stage in 2000, but his legacy as one of the greatest tenors of the twentieth century lives on. Charles Craig passed away on November 7, 2015, at the age of 86. He is remembered as a true giant of the classical music world, whose powerful and expressive voice touched the hearts of audiences around the world. His recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight music lovers to this day, and his legacy as one of the greatest tenors of all time is secure.More....
