Eide Norena was a Norwegian soprano who was born on January 23, 1884, in Oslo, Norway. She was the daughter of a Norwegian father and a Scottish mother. Her father was a successful businessman, and her mother was a talented pianist. Norena grew up in a musical family and showed an early interest in singing. Norena began her musical training at the age of 16 when she started taking singing lessons with the Norwegian soprano Ellen Gulbranson. She made her debut in 1905 at the National Theatre in Oslo, where she sang the role of Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly became a popular singer in Norway. In 1907, Norena traveled to Italy to study with the famous Italian soprano Lilli Lehmann. She spent two years in Italy, studying with Lehmann and performing in various opera houses. In 1909, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan, where she sang the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. Her performance was a great success, and she was invited to perform in other major opera houses in Europe. Norena's career continued to flourish, and she became one of the most popular sopranos of her time. She performed in many major opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She was known for her beautiful voice, her dramatic intensity, and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. One of Norena's most famous performances was in the role of Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. She first performed the role in 1913 at the Royal Opera House in London, and it became one of her signature roles. She also performed the role in other major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Norena was also known for her performances of Norwegian folk songs. She recorded many of these songs, and they became very popular in Norway and other Scandinavian countries. She was a proud Norwegian, and she often included Norwegian songs in her concerts and recitals. Norena received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1925, she was awarded the Order of St. Olav, which is one of the highest honors in Norway. She was also awarded the King's Medal of Merit in gold in 1934. In 1954, she was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Norena retired from singing in 1945, but she continued to be involved in music. She taught singing at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and was a mentor to many young singers. She also served as a judge for many singing competitions. Eide Norena died on June 25, 1968, in Oslo, Norway. She was 84 years old. She is remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of her time and as a proud ambassador of Norwegian music. Her recordings and performances continue to inspire singers and music lovers around the world.
