Henri Defosse was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1921, in Brussels, Belgium. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Henri's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Henri began his musical education at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. He showed great promise and was soon performing in public. At the age of ten, he began studying the violin with his father. Henri quickly became proficient on the instrument and began performing in concerts with his father. In 1936, Henri was accepted into the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied violin with Alfred Dubois and chamber music with André Gertler. He graduated with honors in 1941 and began his professional career as a violinist. Henri's career took off quickly, and he soon became one of the most sought-after violinists in Europe. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Sir Georg Solti. One of the highlights of Henri's career was his performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan in 1958. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Henri received a standing ovation from the audience. Henri was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded many of the great works of the violin repertoire. His recordings of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin and the Beethoven Violin Concerto are considered to be among the finest ever made. In addition to his performing career, Henri was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Conservatoire de Paris, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians. Henri received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1963, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of the Crown by the Belgian government for his contributions to the arts. In 1981, he was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government for his services to music. Henri continued to perform and teach until his death on June 15, 1995, at the age of 74. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century and a beloved teacher and mentor to generations of musicians.
