He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Preis showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Preis received his formal music education at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Friedrich Gulda. He graduated with honors in 1970 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Preis made his debut performance at the Vienna Musikverein in 1972, where he received critical acclaim for his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor. This performance marked the beginning of a successful career for Preis, who went on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Preis was known for his exceptional technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, and was considered one of the leading interpreters of Viennese classical music. In addition to his solo performances, Preis was also a sought-after chamber musician and collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He was also a dedicated teacher and taught at the Vienna Music Academy for over 20 years, where he inspired and mentored countless young musicians. Preis received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, and the Beethoven Ring, which is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the interpretation of Beethoven's music. One of Preis's most memorable performances was his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, which he performed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995. This performance was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpretations of the concerto and cemented Preis's reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Beethoven's music. Sadly, Preis's career was cut short when he passed away on December 28, 2009, at the age of 61. However, his legacy lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.
